CBRNE Situational Awareness Sensor Fusion Platform

Improving the field effectivess of our National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams and other first responders.

Why CYRANO?

Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) survey teams face practical challenges in addition to the inherent dangers of their work. They must juggle several hazard-specific handheld devices and a radio, even when in containment suits. This lack of integrated support can constrain the length, range and effectiveness of time-critical survey missions.

What is CYRANO?

  • Integrates sensor information into a single handheld mobile dashboard
  • Wirelessly transmits readings and mission information
  • Provides real-time, location-based situational awareness
  • Relieves soldier of mundane status radio communications and need to juggle multiple sensors, keeping hands free
  • Incorporates biometric information to monitor soldier
  • Alternatively mounts in vehicle for diagnostics or in command center for mission control and observation

CYRANO Mission

Focused Information: The CYRANO system integrates, aggregates and presents CBRN sensor readings on a single screen from a wide array of devices using a small handtop computer.

Situational Awareness: With the attached global positioning device, sensor and other data can be shared among dispersed survey teams and the command center in near real time.

Efficient Communications: The communications infrastructure and applications facilitate automated routine communications via computer messaging, wisely conserving oxygen and action.

Capabilities

CYRANO supports a wide array of attached devices for sensing hazardous materials, providing communications, and monitoring biometrics.

  • MultiRAE, AreaRAE Sensors
  • M8A1 Automatic Chemical Agent Alarm (ACADA)
  • Thermo Electron Identifinder, FH40
  • Voice Over IP Communications (VoIP)
  • Instant Messaging for Task Management
  • Positioning in Area of Operations
  • Sample Collection Barcode Tagging & Tracking
  • Situational Awareness of Other Units’ Status
  • Remote Multimedia (Photo & Video) Integration
  • Power and connection status monitoring
  • SCBA Tank status monitoring
  • Static and dynamic operation area mapping

Deployments

CYRANO has been deployed with the Michigan National Guard 51st Civil Support Team at events such as Superbowl XL in Detroit and NASCAR auto races at the Michigan International Speedway.

"One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half."

- Winston Churchill

CYRANO was developed under the direction of the US Army National Automotive Center by extending the core component software architecture used for in-vehicle diagnostics, telematics, and RFID applications.
